The Valley Waste Resource Man­age­ment Admin­is­tra­tion build­ing in Kentville, Nova Scotia is the first office build­ing in Canada to be cer­ti­fied by the inter­na­tional Pas­sive House energy stan­dard – a rig­or­ous vol­un­tary energy stan­dard that dra­mat­i­cally reduces the energy require­ments for a build­ing. The build­ing uses a vari­ety of recy­cled and sal­vaged mate­ri­als and less than one-third of the energy of a typ­i­cal office build­ing in Atlantic Canada. It is a can­di­date for LEED Gold cer­ti­fi­ca­tion under the Canada Green Build­ing Coun­cil.

The admin­is­tra­tion build­ing lies adja­cent to the VWRM sort­ing and recy­cling depot and con­tains offices for staff and also serves as the meet­ing place for the VWRM board. With views to the Annapo­lis Valley to the north, it is the main point of con­tact with the public and serves as a focal point for facil­ity tours.

The site has excel­lent solar expo­sure to the south – a per­fect set­ting for the high effi­ciency of the Selux Dis­cera 4 LED Solar lumi­naires. Selux rein­tro­duced its solar light­ing prod­ucts in 2014 to offer one of the most impres­sive and well-designed sys­tems avail­able using an advanced Energy Man­age­ment System (EMS) uti­liz­ing SO-Bright con­trols from SolarOne Solu­tions, allow­ing for custom oper­at­ing pro­files. Selux is proud to be an inte­gral part of this green project that raises the bar for energy effi­cient archi­tec­ture.

  • Selux Solar lighting products were designed to offer one of the most impressive and well-designed systems available. An advanced Energy Management System (EMS) is the heart of the system - it allows for custom operating profiles, Maximum Power-Point Tracking (MPT), Run Time Extension (RTE), and Wireless Programming. All major components including luminaire, PV modules, and batteries are constantly monitored to ensure reliable operation. No lift required for diagnosing problems, checking component status, or reprogramming - the provided wireless remote does all this from the ground and can even be used as an on/off switch for the luminaire. UL listed PV modules are available up to 320W and Absorbed Glass Matt (AGM) batteries up to 352Ah maintain capacity better in cold climates. Four unique luminaires and optical systems produce precise distributions with maximum visual comfort. All parts of the system are neatly packaged to provide a clean look.
