THE CASE FOR RED LIGHTING IN THE OUTDOORS AT NIGHT

This course explores the effects of white and red light on living systems, beginning with how flora and fauna perceive and respond to different wavelengths of light. It examines the impact of artificial lighting on plants and wildlife—including insects, birds, turtles, fish, and bats—while introducing the benefits and limitations of red light in outdoor environments. The course reviews precedents and real-world case studies to illustrate effective applications, along with key considerations for when caution is needed. It also provides foundational knowledge on light spectrum and its biological implications and concludes with the principles of good outdoor lighting to support safe, responsible, and environmentally conscious design.

BEHIND THE FIXTURE: MANUFACTURING LIGHTING FOR MENTAL HEALTH CARE FACILITIES

Designing lighting fixtures for mental and behavioral health care facilities requires a heightened focus on safety, durability, and long-term performance. While much of the industry discussion centers on environmental design and clinical outcomes, fewer programs address the challenges faced by manufacturers tasked with translating these goals into compliant, buildable, and maintainable lighting solutions. This course examines mental health care lighting through the eyes of the manufacturer, exploring how safety requirements, testing standards, materials, and evolving care models influence product design and specification. Participants will gain insight into common coordination challenges, how to evaluate manufacturers beyond aesthetics alone, and what criteria support safer, more resilient lighting solutions in high-risk environments.
