Landmark Place
Kingston, NY
Landmark Place in Kingston, New York is a senior and supportive housing community that brings together historic preservation and new construction. This 14-acre campus includes the restored former Kingston Almshouse, now known as Landmark West, alongside the newly constructed Landmark East. Designed by Dutton Architecture, the project carefully balances the historic character of the original building with the addition of a modern four-story residence. Four outbuildings repurposed for modern use, focused primarily on supportive services. With the historic and modern elements brought together across the campus, the exterior environment also needed to feel cohesive, welcoming, and accessible. This project specifically called for an exterior lighting solution that would provide comfortable illumination around the property while remaining mindful of the surrounding environment. Our Inula and Astro luminaires were selected for this project, combining controlled light distribution with an emphasis on visual comfort, sustainability, and DarkSky- conscious design.

Inula provided the flexibility needed throughout the exterior, creating a consistent lighting language across the project through stack columns as well as bollards. The column configurations offered flexibility in height and scale, while the bollard incorporated an optical system divided into four independently configurable quadrants. These quadrants allow light to be distributed in 90-, 180-, 270-, or 360-degree patterns, giving the designers precise control to direct light only where it was needed. This helped illuminate pathways and surrounding outdoor areas while minimizing unnecessary spill light.
With zero uplight, Inula helped reduce light pollution and preserve the night sky, while its modular design enabled flexibility across different exterior applications. Astro, a post-top luminaire featuring Gen5 optical technology, featured in the project, further enhanced light control and visual comfort while minimizing unwanted stray light. Although Astro has since been discontinued, its contribution to the project remains part of the lighting design story.
