French-chic design, seamlessly lit — Air France's reimagined
San Francisco lounge, illuminated by Piix™ MRC Arrays

project

Air France – San Francisco Airport, International Terminal A

San Francisco, CA

Air France’s newly renovated lounge located in San Francisco Airport is nothing short of commitment, heritage, and chic yet modern design. The space has been expanded to just over 6,000 square feet, compared to its previous render, which was 1,000 square feet less, allowing for more space per passenger. Opened in June of 2023, the Air France lounge is a space dedicated to those who are committed to taking advantage of their time whilst traveling abroad. Whether it involves working, charging devices, having a drink or having something to eat between flights or possibly all the above! The new and improved Air France lounge allows its customers these sorts of flexibilities all while being surrounded by a design that looks to celebrate that French-chic aesthetic travel experience. La Première first-class customers as well as Flying Blue Ultimate members can expect a full-service bar with French wines and champagne, as well as a hot and cold buffet. The lounge also offers a VIP room for its La Première first class members and a separate reserved area for Flying Blue Ultimate members.

The gracious balance of heritage and modernity is something Air France and the SGK Brandimage Agency focused on when it came to the design. Aligned with Air France’s aesthetic, the redesigned lounge features a refined color palette, warm wood finishes, and a balance of graphic lines and organic forms. Material changes define distinct spaces within the open layout while guiding the passenger experience. Navigating local codes and SFO’s unique building standards, William Duff Architects delivered a luxury, technology-integrated lounge. Touches of wood and leather, accented by shades of blue, white, and red inspired by Air France’s signature colors. Furniture designed by French designers such as Pierre Pualin, Patrick Jouin, and the Bouroullec brothers were all predicated on the French travel experience while maintaining a sort of classy chic comfortable yet modern environment.

All the more reason why the Piix™ MRC Arrays lights were selected for this project. With the Piix™ MRC Arrays it provides the space with visually soft and comfortable light with a low UGF, providing exceptional comfort by minimizing glare and reducing eye strain. Not only can the lounge receive efficient yet controlled distributed lighting, but also a quiet ceiling. Meaning the Piix™ MRC Arrays are purposely designed to be easier on the eyes. In addition, the surface-mounted Piix fixture integrates seamlessly between wood slats, disappearing into the architecture. Allowing the material design within the space, as well as the lighting in the space, to be the main focal point of a project, not the fixture. Less glare, more light Piix™ MRC Arrays.
