Selux Manufacturing Engineer
2 Years at Selux
Q: How long have you been with Selux?
I have been here for 2 years. I started in June of 2023.
Q: Why did you initially come to Selux and why do you stay
Selux was the only company to give me a chance to interview for an engineering position, which I didn’t get. They offered me an entry-level role with room to grow, close to home, so I took it. I stayed because I was able to move into an engineering position, and I enjoy the work and the people I work with.
Q: Can you describe your current role?
As a Manufacturing Engineer, I assist production, implement factory changes to increase efficiency, create standard work instructions, and modify parts/assemblies for manufacturability, efficiency, and cost. Our main focus is converting the factory to lean manufacturing.
Q: What does a typical day or week look like?
I spend most of my time at a standing desk in the assembly area, staying accessible to help production. I answer questions and assist wherever needed. The rest of the time is varied—I might work on instructions, make factory layout changes in AutoCAD, set up kanban inventory locations, or focus on new projects.
Q: How has your path evolved at Selux?
I started in the applications department doing CAD drawings for orders. About a year later, I transitioned into my current role as a Manufacturing Engineer.
Q: How do you collaborate with other teams?
Besides daily work with manufacturing teams, we frequently meet with design engineers to improve product manufacturability. Manufacturing engineers collaborate across nearly every department.
Q: What do you love about working at Selux and in this field?
I like working with people close to my age and appreciate the 4-day work week. Being just 10 minutes from New Paltz is a bonus. I love the manufacturing path I’ve taken because it’s fast-paced and offers something different every day.
Q:What excites you most about your role?
I enjoy the fast pace and variety. There’s always a lot to get done, which keeps things interesting and dynamic.
Q: What’s your favorite part of the company culture?
I like how everyone pitches in to push out orders at the end of each month.
Q: What skills have you gained that help outside of work?
I’ve learned AutoCAD and improved my SolidWorks and Excel skills, which I use for personal projects in my free time.
Q: What accomplishment are you most proud of?
I’m proud of how the factory looks now compared to when I started. I’ll be even prouder when the lean conversion is complete.
Q: How does your role contribute to the company’s success?
The lean conversion is crucial for our long-term success. In the short term, assisting with floor problems helps keep production moving smoothly.
Q: Who has inspired you at Selux?
Jamie has taught me a lot about manufacturing engineering. In my previous role, I learned AutoCAD and product knowledge from Pete and Justin.
Q: Which projects are you most proud of?
Projects like the new paint system and assembly area redesigns are meaningful because I spent a lot of time designing them in AutoCAD. Seeing and working in the final results is very rewarding.
